​The Satsumabiwa is a lute that emerged in southern Kyushu in the early 16th Century. Used in the narration of texts, it is designed to cultivate the moral ideals of the warrior class. Drawing on thirty years of study and performance, the author shares insight into the instrument's music, history, and philosophy through a personal journey of discovery.
